Hi,
I'm an intermediate to advanced level player with about 15-20 years playing experience (on and off). I've had the same Tele for a long time and been happy with it. But now I'm looking for something like a Strat.
I'd like a lower cost Strat-like guitar (maybe G&L, Mex Strat whatever) that I can monkey around with- like change the pick-ups and not worry about killing the value of a high end guitar.
Any ideas? I'm not fully sure of what is out there. And hidden gems? Guitars that have great necks and action, but just need some pick-ups replaced?
Your experience and thoughts are greatly appreciated.
JD

Value? You mean these things actually have monetary value after you've taken them out of the store?
You lose 50% value approx on a new guitar. Get a used one but try it first because you never know how well people took care of it.
Grab a MIM Strat. I've played some that are as good as the USA stuff. Or grab a G&L Legacy if you don't mind paying $1200 new, but you can find one for $700 used.
I really wouldn't worry about resale value since there really isn't any unless you have a collector piece.
Basically the lower the initial outlay of cash, the less your loss if you do sell.

Everyone's take on what feels good is different.
For as long as you have been playing you shouldn't have any problem being able to tell when a guitar feels good to you. I'd just get out to the music stores and play everything you can get your hands on. You might find that perfect gem that no one else would think of!

I agree with the notion of a MIM start, looking at used guitars, G & L guitars, and that you should go out to a music store and play. However also take a look at Squier guitars as they have been getting better and better. The classic vibe series have garnered some great reviews and cost around $300 - $400

Thanks for the ideas...so many 'Strats' out there...
I've seen a new US Legacy for $800 and I am thinking of going for it. But $800 seems too good to be true. But I've seen it - the head stock says made in USA and no sign of a 'Tribute' label anywhere.
Seem possible?
