Buying a Guitar

Hello, this is my first post and id like to thank you beforehand. Ive been playing guitars for quite a few years and ive decided to upgrade my guitar. Im looking for something in the 1000-1300 dollar range. Im mostly inclined towards metal, but not your typical stuff, as i usually listen to these avant garde bands that mix heavy with acoustic, mellow passages (think Opeth).

So, im looking for a guitar that can handle really heavy stuff, but give me a sweet tone for acoustic stuff. The models ive thought about are

John 5 Telecaster
Les Paul Studio
Firebird Studio
Fender Jaguar HH Special Baritone Guitar
Steinberger Transcale Demon

Id like to know your opinion. Only that, if you are to give me another suggestion please bear in mind my price target Smiley

Thanks. I have till january to decide, but seeing as it is quite some dough im kinda anxious with it lol

Hard to beat a Les Paul Studio in my opinion. I bought one used and saved probably $300-$400. Its just a well rounded guitar.

I also use and Ibanez RG series that is neck through designed. Also has the Floyd Rose tremelo. Great guitar for the price. Also well rounded as it has a 5 way pick up switch and 24 frets.

I've heard/read that ESP make some great metal stuff as well, but I have never owned one.

If you're looking at spending that much you should really try to play the guitars you're looking at multiple times and through your rig if possible. If not, something close to it. Everyone has different reasons for what they like to play, theres not really a wrong choice.

For heavy tones with great clarity for fast passage riffing, I am really loving what I get from my Les Paul custom. I swapped out the pickups for a pair of Bareknuckes painkillers.

Get a used Les Paul or similar thick bodied single cut mahogany guitar (not necessarily a Gibson), and put a pair of painkillers in it. Go to sevenstring.org and find Zimbloth. He deals BKP pickups and has the best prices.

Naturally this is just one of many ways to go.

Of course, the bigger question on tone is what kind of amp are you using?

Good advice Zug

Gibsons are overpriced but they are very good. I have a Studio Gibson but don't play it much anymore , too heavy for long sessions. Maybe the new ones are chambered.
Julia just got a new Epiphone LP for under $400,
Just put Bareknuckles on one of those and you may have a better sound than the Studio. But there are other guitars that are lighter like Arias , Ibanez,PRS that would be great with Bareknuckles.
Play the baritone Jag before you buy the regular HH one may be more versatile.

Hello, thanks for the replies. Well, im currently using a Behringer V-Amp but that can change eventually. I saw this Swamp Ash Les Paul Studio and it really looks like a fit with me, since the wood apparently has "heavy" tonal qualities.

But yeah, i think there is a certain price range where regardless of which guitar you pick its kind of hard to go wrong with

Julia here had a swamp ash studio and she didn't take to it so well. I think she sold it. Swamp ash is something I associate with more of a tele sound. I would be careful about going that way, and would recommend you spend some quality time comparing the sound to other LPs and other guitars.

Most of the times that I've heard of swamp ash used as a selling point in a guitar it's usually associated with single coil equipped guitars. Sometimes in Strats but mostly in Teles as zug-uitar pointed out.

To be honest I don't know much about playing metal but perhaps something with EMG pickups... like the Zakk Wylde Les Paul custom?

Would have liked to have played that Swamp Ash myself. Beautiful guitar. Just gorgeous. Seems to get very good reviews.

Perhaps Julia will describe the tone. I'd thought she let it go because of the neck profile.

New Studios range from $8-1300, with the Swamp Ash at ~ 14. The more affordable ones are satin finished, which I don't favor, but offer a substantial savings.

I've seen used Studios with the better finish go for $700.

Lot's of preloved ones available, but I've seen many that conveniently remove the fact that they're the satin finish which makes their asking price appear much more attractive...extreemely mis-leading.

I've got a Studio made in '07 and love it.

FWIW I sold the Swamp Ash Les Paul Studio because I was having problems with the neck vs. hand combination, not because of the tone of the instrument. I liked the tone a lot. I had hand problems, and have since gone over to all slim C and thin U necks (except for the Ovation). It is a bit brighter than the typical Les Paul. And has one big plus -- it isn't as heavy.

It was a satin finish, but if you wanted it turned into a gloss it isn't that difficult to do -- just some more rubbing on the finish. Any professional woodworker could do it. The neck being satin is a big plus. Now if Gibson would only offer slimline 60's necks on the Studios....

This said, my Epiphone LP Special with the P90s just screams. Bright as hell.

I'd also look at the ESP Eclipse II which is in the same price range as the Gibson LP Studio. I really like the feel of the ESP in Vintage Black. If that's a little steep, check the LTD EC-1000 in the same color.

www.carvin.com

is that $1300USD? Opeth uses PRS Custom 22's, I think $1300USD snags you a used Standard or CE model.

The old DeathCharge is DEAD! Haha

And you can snag a Swamp Ash LP for about $850 US used. Same for the ESP used. I mean who cares what the band actually uses. And each instrument sounds different within the same brand and model.

Face the facts. You're never going to duplicate another band's recorded tone. Nor really their live sound either. We simply just don't have the equipment to do it.

Lots of great suggestions. I would go with a lot of them. But Consider this http://www.bcrich.com/zombie.asp#

It is definitely a beast of a guitar. Neck through design, mahogany wood on the body, ebony fretboard, and 24 Jumbo frets. and only runs about $700-780 or so.

Also comes with the BDSM p-ups. I have these in my Warlock Metal Master edition. They are extremely heavy distorted, but clean, provides a very rich sound. (In my opinion of course.) Plus they seem to cut out a LARGE amount of distortion buzz caused by heavy gain.

Not to mention the body style is sick. Smiley

I am mainly a Metal musician. I have fallen in love with my Warlock since I got it, and now have aspirations to get this bad boy.

Just something to consider...

PS: I know a LOT of people here hate the way B.C. Riches look... But hey... It's an opinion... Smiley
