It looks to surely make tabulature reading easier for the sight impaired -- as in I need to put the tabulature about 3 feet away to get it into focus and then it is too small to read it. Luckily I can read music.

Problem is I already have them. They don't do the job unless I position my head up while I look down with my eyes, which makes everything uncomfortable. Basically i need a separate pair of glasses but the problem with those is that the print isn't large enough.

I figure if the passage is important to get exact I'll go down to Kinkos and blow it up to 11 x 17 on cardstock. If not, I'll go by ear and it'll be good enough.

Playing a note for note solo is just muscle coordination and muscle memory anyway until you get it memorized. Then it becomes the muscle part plus the brain part.

Yeah, me personally I'm not too much into the note for note stuff. I have a hard time playing anything without embellishing, but it is something I'm working on.

If you copy music note by note you're a robot. Smiley

Gotta have style! Gotta have feelings! Works for me.

I can't agree with that. Learning to copy a solo note-for-note trains your ear and builds your technique, much like playing scales does. And, it disciplines you. Having said that, there comes a time when you're ready to move on and play your own stuff, but I think you miss out on a lot if you don't learn to play some things note-for-note.

Whenever I've been neglecting my electric playing for a while and need to get back up to speed, two of my favorite exercises are the original "Crossroads" solos, and the first solo from "One Way Out." I learned them a long time ago, and they bring my chops back really quickly.

I have both kinds of guitars - Fender AND Gibson.

When you hear covers do you hear note to note as the original? Not all of them do. Some wants to play in their styles.

I think it all depends. As far as cover tunes go, some songs have solos that are so well composed, they make themselves part of the fabric of the somg, and you'd be crazy not to play something that's as least as close as you can get. Other times, just jammin' away makes more sense. But I still think there's a lot of value in learning how to copy solos as closely as you can, for the reasons I mentioned before. I think you need to be able to do both.

I know what you're saying and I went to enough concerts that the artists themselves played diferently than the recorded versions. They differs from one venue to another and that probably depends on how they're feeling or what mood they're in.

The recorded versions are from studio works. Sometimes you can't duplicate it playing live.

Right, and that's why they're good enough to do what they do for a living, and we just aspire. When it's your tune, artistic license is expanded greatly. When you're playing "Gimme Three Steps" in a hillbilly bar, the rules change a little bit.

I think we're on the same page. My point was only that if you hear a really good guitar solo on a recording, trying to play it just like the record can do nothing but help you. You'll know when it's time to move on. Once that process begins, you begin to ask yourself "Why shouldn't I try to write a song, and then play a solo where none ever existed?" I think you understand.

But what if you can't write lyrics?

I have a friend who plays piano and had glasses specially made so she could look at the music on the stand built into the piano and be able to see it clearly. They had her sit at the piano bench and measured the distance from her eyes to the music, and made the glasses accordingly.

Fortunately, lyrics have been my strong suit, so I can't give you a definitive answer, but I think maybe it's why the Bernie Taupins of this world exist. I don't think Elton John ever wrote a lyric in his life.

Plus, there have been a lot of pretty good songs that have REALLY stupid lyrics. I wouldn't let a perceived inability to write lyrics stop you. There's a practice effect to be had there as well, and an initial fear to overcome. It's an intimidating, yet cathartic process. Don't deprive yourself of it.

My personal feeling is that the best lyrics can be interpreted in a number of different ways, and each listener pulls his/her own meaning out of them.
